CHAPTER 8

Chinatown.

What the hell was he doing in Chinatown?

Caleb stepped from under a dark awning and blinked into the early morning dim. He fished for his cell phone to check the time, thanking a God he was barely on speaking terms with that it was still in his coat pocket. Six forty-five in the morning. On a Thursday. He was in Chinatown, at nearly seven in the morning, on a Thursday. The intense shudder that hit him just then had nothing at all to do with the time of year. Actually, the morning was sort of mild for a change.

But... what in the everloving fuck?

His head and neck were killing him. The pain was most intense over his right eyelid, which fluttered and twitched entirely of its own accord. He backtracked mentally. He remembered hooking up with that guy he’d run into by the Sculpture Garden. Dinner at The Willard Room. After that it all got a little fuzzy, but they must’ve had some kick-ass sex because Caleb was achy in all the right places. Every time he tried to grab onto a clear memory of the rest though, it all went up in smoke just like when he tried to remember a dream the morning after. Hell, he could hardly remember what the guy looked like.

“Must have had more to drink than I thought,” he mumbled to himself. But that had been... Valentine’s Day, right?

Valentine’s Day had been on Tuesday.

Today was Thursday.

An older, unnecessarily bundled up man pushed past and Caleb almost jumped out of his skin. His mumbled “excuse me” felt unnecessary since the man had been the one to run into him, but he was out of sorts to begin with and his grandmother had always told him to treat other people the way he wanted to be treated.

Still, the guy’s body language got all stiff and his eyes narrowed, as he stared down his nose and sniffed derisively like Caleb had done something to personally piss in his morning Cheerios. Jeez, probably wasn’t like that guy had found himself standing around randomly in Chinatown with no clue what he was doing there.

Whatever.

Caleb walked out toward the street. How could he have just lost time like that? He rubbed his head and neck. He did have a headache. But not one so bad that he could blame things on an alcohol-induced blackout. At least, he didn’t think so. He wasn’t that queasy or anything. God. He scrubbed a hand over his face and willed the twitching eyelid to calm down. He didn’t know what to think.

Caleb turned slowly back toward the building 777. Did he know somebody who lived there? He didn’t think so. Since moving to DC he’d been in Chinatown once, and that was to drop his buddy Neil at some bus station. He had no clue how he would’ve wound up here. No clubs he would’ve come to. No one he knew who lived in the area.

Right?

Something nudged at Caleb’s squishy gray matter. That
